About the Album
The Shit — often referred to as Annapolis, MD — is the debut album from Annapolis, Maryland punk band The Shit, originally released by Vermin Scum Records on December 18, 1992. Originally available only on vinyl, that pressing has long been out of print. For three decades, the record remained unavailable in any other format before Big Curve Music brought the album to digital platforms in 2022.
The original Vermin Scum release described the record as “chapter one” of an alternative guidebook to Annapolis — a look beneath the Naval Academy, state capitol, historic district and marinas at the strange and thriving underground music scene developing around the city in the early 1990s.
At the center of the band was Psycho Mike, whose songs and unpredictable performances helped shape The Shit’s identity. He was joined by Chris Rolling on bass and brothers John Marburger on lead guitar and Lex Marburger on drums. The band practiced in the basement of 911 Madison Street in Eastport and became part of the loose community surrounding the now-legendary Dogs and Bestgate-A-Go-Go shows.
According to the story printed on the original LP, someone eventually told the group, “You guys are the SHIT” — and the name stuck. Their short, loud and unconventional brand of rock ’n’ roll became another chapter in Annapolis’ fiercely independent underground scene.
Recorded in 1992 at LSP Studios and mastered at Greg Lee Processing, The Shit captures the band’s original lineup across 14 tracks. With the original Vermin Scum vinyl pressing long out of print, Big Curve Music released the album digitally on December 19, 2022, making this piece of Annapolis underground music history widely available again for the first time in three decades.
